Roberto De Zerbi insists he needs to offload a number of his squad as he aims to transform Marseille.
The Italian coach surprise everyone by agreeing to take over at Olympique de Marseille in the middle of last year, despite being link with a number of Europe’s top clubs.
De Zerbi main task is to revive OM in Ligue 1, but the key to that is the massive squad overhaul over the summer.
Several key players from the 2023/24 season have been release by the club, including Jordan Veretout, Jonathan Glos, Azzedine Ounai and Pau Lopez, among others, as well as Chancel Mbembeau, whose future with the team has end.
“I have considered that there are several players who need to leave the team,” De Zerbi told French outlet.
“Although Veretout, Glos and Mbemba are very good players, Marseille need a fundamental change. Unai also wanted to leave and I knew it from the beginning.
“That’s why I didn’t use him in the friendlies in UFABET England or Germany. We will assess the situation this season and see what happens next season because he is still under contract.”
Most of these players have now been move on from Marseille. However, Mbemba remains in La Provence and looks set to remain at the club for the remainder of the final year of his contract. De Zerbi was willing to take responsibility for asking the club to move on from these previous key figures.
